Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking

Mount Batur is an active volcano situated at the heart of two concentric calderas, located to the northwest of Mount Agung in Bali. The southeastern portion of the larger caldera, spanning roughly 10 by 13 kilometers, holds a scenic caldera lake within its basin. Nested inside is a smaller caldera, about 7.5 kilometers wide, formed during a volcanic event now dated to somewhere between 23,670 and 28,500 years ago.

Many travelers make their way here to admire the view or take on the climb themselves. For those who love the outdoors, this mountain offers exactly what they’re looking for. The ascent takes about 1.5 hours from the base of the slope to the summit, rewarding climbers with a breathtaking sunrise view, with the silhouette of Lombok Island visible in the distance.

The caldera area is home to a local population spread across four main villages: Kedisan, Songan, Trunyan, and Toya Bungkah. While agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for residents, tourism has grown increasingly important thanks to the relatively accessible trek leading up to the summit of the central crater.
